Planning to buy the Panasonic SD-257WXC?

You've made a great choice because it is:

Recommended as a Best Buy by consumer magazine Which (Oct 2010)

Here's what they had to say about this bread making machine...

"It's another great Panasonic Best Buy, baking excellent wholemeal bread and good white bread. The rapid-bake white loaf isn't bad either. It's easy to use and comes with a fruit and nut dispenser, so you don't have to wait around to manually add extra ingredients. Rye, brioche and gluten-free programs are also included."

What Customers Like About The Panasonic SD-257WXC

Easy to use
Above everything else, it's just so easy to use. Ingredients in, press a couple of buttons, press 'start', come back in a few hours, there's your loaf. There's a timer on it so you can pop the ingredients in in the evening, set the timer, and wake up to freshly baked bread for breakfast.

Good kitchen scale is recommended - for the best results you need to be precise. Important condition for a successful result is to strictly follow of exact proportions of ingredients for which the best help is to buy electronic scales.

Quieter than other machines
So I thought I'd splash out on this one instead, and I'm so happy with it. It makes much nicer bread than my previous and the cycles are much quieter.

Does more than bake bread
It's also more than a breadmaker. As I type this I'm tucking into a hazelnut and honey loaf cake, also done in this Panasonic. When we've finished that I'm going to try a cherry & marizpan cake. Besides cake it also does brioche, malt loaf, rye, French, Italian, brioche, gluten-free, dough-making, hot cross buns, croissants, Viennese rolls, gingerbreads, soda bread, and that's just selected highlights from the list.

Kneading blade
I also love the fact that the kneading blade stays in the bread pan

Good recipe book
Great reliability of the recipes. If you do what it says in the instruction book then you get a good loaf of bread. It produces very consistent results.

Easy to Clean
It is extremely easy to clean (with clear instructions in the manual), which was one of my main worries. One of the things I worried about was that it'd be a huge hassle to clean. It isn't, well, not really. The non-stick container can be easily cleaned with a wet sponge, though it remains to be seen how long the the non-stick coating will last.

Pure Ingredients
You know exactly what's going into your loaf because you put it there. You know exactly what you are eating. You buy the ingredients, and stick them in. You don't put any preservatives in, and you can buy the best flour and yeast, and yet the cost is still incredibly low.

If you have had a bread machine before, that you fell out of love with, do not judge this machine on that basis. This is a whole new experience and should be shouted from the rooftops. Buy this machine, then tell the world about it.

Niggles

If you put in the wrong ingredients, or the wrong amount of ingredients, the results can be disappointing - it doesn't lend itself much to 'experimenting' with trying to invent your own recipes, which have tended to be a bit heavy and flat.

One minor gripe- not important enough for it to be less than 5 starts- is that it doesn't have an 'off' switch, you have to unplug it at the wall or wait for it to turn off automatically, which can lead to over-baking on the timer function.

While it's not strictly the breadmaking device's fault, the whole process might be rather fattening!!!

The only problem is the blade nearly always remains in the loaf. As recommended in the instructions I have tried adding more water, up to what I find is the maximum before it affects the quality of the loaf, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

The kneading blade can be quite annoying to clean as dough can get into the slot and dry out, requiring a long soak and quite a lot of jiggery pokery to remove.
